The Otto Community Center is working with WNC Communities (WNCC) to develop emergency resilience plans based on lessons learned from Hurricane Helene. Otto has received emergency equipment and grant funding to help establish the Center as a community resource during future emergencies. The Center now has Starlink internet access and a solar-powered generator available for use during widespread power outages caused by severe weather or other events. We have also offered classes on using GMRS radios for emergency communication if cellular service is unavailable. Many community members now have radios, and plans are underway to organize a response group that can assist where needed.
Additional information will be added to this page and shared with our email subscribers as plans are finalized. In the meantime, households can prepare by assembling Go Bags and Stay Boxes. Each household should be ready to manage for at least 72 hours without outside assistance. Download the PDF below for a list of recommended emergency supplies.
