What’s in a Name?

We are one of 13 “Otto” communities in America

Located over 400 miles from nearest town carrying the same name

Was our community named after:

Otto, a Roman Emperor?

The Ottoman Empire?

No!

Otto was a popular name during the late 1800’s and was simply chosen by postmaster Isaac Bradley when asked by the US Postal Service to name a new NC post office on June 30, 1882* - almost 130 years ago.

Otto, North Carolina is located on the North Carolina border with Georgia and straddles US 441. Otto's population is estimated at around 3,500 according to the last census. It is basically a rural community lying within Macon County.

Downtown Otto is generally considered to center on the intersection of Tessentee Road on the east, Firehouse Road on the west and US 441 running north and south. You can't miss it. Just look for the post office on the west side of that intersection.
The community center is located at 65 Firehouse Road just off of US 441. When you see the local volunteer fire department, you’ll find the community center just behind the fire station. Most of the association meetings and community events are held at the community center. It’s also where the Smithbridge precinct votes.

The Otto Community Building is now open again and is available for rental. Our 3,000 square foot building is available for rental to area residents at a reasonable price to host your family - civic - religious activities. The center features a full kitchen and has restroom facilities.
